Chincoteague Ponies

Ponies

Content as they wait for auction during the annual Chincoteague Fireman’s Carnival. Every summer the ponies that live on the Virginia end of Assateague Island are rounded up and swim across to Chincoteague where the young are auctioned to raise money for the fire department. The fire department owns and manages the heard of roughly 150 adult ponies. The auction assures the health of the heard as their natural environment can only support 150 or so ponies.
